    complementaryComplementary Therapy

    Firrhill Centre has been providing Complementary therapies for over 8 years. The Centre offers a range of therapies and all therapists are fully experienced and qualified.

    The therapies offered are: Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Bio Dynamic Massage,

    Chinese Herbal Medicine, Indian Head Massage, Massage, Meditation, Reiki, Relaxation, Reflexology, Therapeutic Massage

    Who is the service available to?

    The service is available to people in receipt of disability benefits, their carers and staff who work beside people with disabilities.

    Costs

    The fees are £16 for clients and carers -£22 for staff per hour. Half hour appointments are available @ 50% of above.

    24 hours notice must be given otherwise full payment will be charged.

    Note - this service is heavily subsidised. Any carer who feels they can afford to pay more should do.

Mission Statement

The Occupational Therapy service offers specialist assessment and intervention through the use of purposeful occupation (activity) for individuals who have a physical disability, living in the community.

To provide an occupational therapy service which facilitates individuals to achieve or maintain their optimum level of function and quality of life.
To assess clients effectively using standardised or non-standardised assessments and to provide the appropriate intervention.
To work with the clients in the context of their own personal, social, cultural and economic environment.
To liase with other workers in the centre.
To liase with and offer support to clients and carers.
To provide an accessible, flexible and responsive service, developing links with health services and other community agencies.
To provide guidance and relevant education to other staff.
To facilitate the education of students.

juggle Service Priorities

All new referrals are seen by the occupational therapist. Due to the demand for placements in the centre, priority is given to individuals who:

  • Live in isolation in the community.
  • Have a lack of opportunity to use other community agencies.
  • Require carer / family respite.
  • Have potential to benefit from physical and psychosocial rehabilitation.
  • Have psychosocial barriers to independent living.
  • Demonstrate high motivation to use centre’s resources.

balance Model of Practice

The occupational therapists use the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance. This is in keeping with the client-centred approach promoted throughout the centre by all centre staff. This approach is based on the democratic ideas of employment, justice and enablement. The occupational therapists focus on occupation, which is everything people do to occupy themselves, including looking after themselves (self-care), enjoying life (leisure), and contributing to the social and economic fabric of their communities (productivity). (Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists 1997).

refferal procedure Referral Procedure

Applications are normally channelled through professional workers through the CARENAP system. Full Carenap and any additional supporting information should be sent to Mark Grierson, Day Services Manager, Health and Social Care, City Of Edinburgh Council, level 1:6 Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, EH8 8BG.

The occupational therapists deal with pre-referral inquiries and visits from potential clients.

assessment Assessment

Initial assessment takes the form of the clients attending the centre for one day. During this day the assessment procedure includes the use of standardised assessments: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Barthel Index, and non-standardised assessment: the clients physical, psychological, social and cognitive function. A report is written and each case is discussed at the Centre’s intake meeting where the team makes a decision as to whether a place can be offered.
Following the offer of a place, further assessment is carried out in the form of a group of new clients that meet weekly for six weeks. During this six-week period assessment focuses on further identifying the clients function within the centre and their ability to use transport to and from the Centre. Each client, with the occupational therapist, completes the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) in order to identify occupational performance problems that are significant to the client.
Other standardised assessments may be used as appropriate.

intervention Intervention

The clients and therapist identify appropriate activities that enable the client to focus on occupations identified in the COPM. The client may then participate in appropriate groups in the Centre, or utilise other community agencies / resources. The occupational therapist will liase closely with the clients, allocated key / link / support worker.
The occupational therapist may continue to work with the new client after the six-week period, or with established clients on an individual basis to enable them to reach their maximum level of functioning. Also, the occupational therapist may lead a group for clients in the centre that will run on a modular basis.
Specific responsibilities of the occupational therapist are:
Manual handing risk assessments and recommendations for safe manual handing.
Maintenance of wheelchairs.
Provision of equipment to enhance independent function in the centre.
Development of communicatively based groups.

evaluation Evaluation

A review meeting is held for new clients after six months, when the occupational therapist will repeat the COPM to evaluate the clients perceived progress. After this initial review, all clients have an annual review and where appropriate the occupational therapist will attend the review to monitor the clients overall level of functioning. The occupational therapist will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing discussion about the progress of all clients at centre meetings.
All of the occupational therapists intervention is recorded in the client’s centre file.

  • This Health Trust offers both communication groups and individual speech therapy within the centre. All services users can be assessed for this service when they first attend the centre.
